learners or students are at the center of the teaching and learning processes, and teachers must be able to identify and aid different types of learners. Understanding the different types of learners would be tremendously helpful in assisting teachers in developing appropriate materials to fulfill the diverse learning needs.

The Three Basic Types Of Learners are as follows:

  • Those who are slow learners (Backward Learners)
  • Learners who are gifted and talented (Fast Learners)
  • Normal Learners of Ordinary Ability (Average Learners)

Slow Learners or Learners Who Are Slow

Slow learners lag behind in practically everything they undertake, particularly schooling. They appear to be resistant to all learning methods and procedures due to a variety of learning problems. This group of students consists of students who are mentally impaired or have learning disabilities.

Characteristics of Slow Learners

  • Slow learners have a short attention span, which means they can’t focus for lengthy amounts of time, as well as a short memory, making it difficult for them to recall what they’ve been taught.
  •  Slow learners are constantly bored and disinterested in learning.
  • They lack strong communication skills. They are illiterate in both oral and written communication, and they have poor eye-hand coordination. They can’t see or copy accurately.
  • Their math ability is weak, and they have poor calculation skills.
  • They have a bad social connection and struggle to get along with others. • They perform poorly on all tests and evaluations.

Causes  Of Slow Learning  

  1. Health Issues: The mother of a kid may have had measles, venereal diseases, or other disorders that contributed to the child’s mental disability. It’s also possible that the mother suffered from malnutrition during her pregnancy. The infant’s health may be jeopardized after birth.
  2. Psychological Issues: Because the mother’s health affects the child, moms who experience extreme and excessive anxiety, worry, stress, and the like may have disturbed children.
  3. If slowness or dullness runs in the family, inherited attributes from parents may influence a child’s general intellectual development.
  4. Home Issues: The child may be influenced by broken households and considerable poverty on the part of the parents.
  5. Poor teaching methods, poor student-teacher interactions, and a poor learning environment are all instances of school-related concerns.

Gifted And Talented Learners

Students that are clever and talented have consistently high intellectual talents.

Characteristics of Gifted and Talented Learners

  1. They have high academic achievement and can cover a lot of ground in a short period of time.
  2. They think rapidly, are highly creative and original, and possess exceptional constructive abilities.
  3. They have a fantastic working relationship. They have a lot of fun making new pals.
  4. They are great leaders who can work well under pressure.
  5. They are usually very good at everything, including science, languages, the arts, and even sports.

Normal Learners With Ordinary Ability

The great majority of students can be classified as typical. That is, the vast majority of students are of average competence.

Characteristics of Normal Learners

  1. They have the average ability.
  2. They have their own learning challenges, such as being late to school, being truant, being in the wrong peer group, and so on.
  3. They display their abilities when faced with adversity.

How To Recognize The Different Types Of Learners

  1. Physical exams and non-test instruments include interviews, case studies, special meetings with parents, and constant observation in and out of class by instructors.
