A qualified teacher is an educator who has earned credentials from a credible organization, such as the government, a higher education institution, or a private organization or source. This teacher certification allows a teacher to teach and grade at a specific level of education that is generally related to the subject(s) they teach, which could be in pre-schools, primary or secondary education in countries, schools, curriculum areas, or curricula where authorization is required.
While many certifying bodies require student teaching before awarding certification, one of the academic and professional degrees required to become a registered teacher is a teaching qualification.
There are numerous types of government-approved teacher education certificates in Nigeria. It all depends on the level of education you intend to deliver and the type of academic teaching positions you seek. In any case, you must be qualified if you wish to teach in one of Nigeria’s government-approved public or private schools.
When the Nigerian education policy was implemented, the Nigerian educational system was supposed to be administered by five sorts of institutions, each with its own set of qualifications. In 1980, the Nigeria Educational Research and Council (NERC) listed them as follows:
1. These were once required subjects in secondary school. They awarded the Teachers Certificate Grade, which was previously the bare minimum for teaching in primary schools throughout the country. This training is provided through colleges of education and institutes of education.
3. Junior secondary teachers with NCEs and university degrees. These universities provide postsecondary education programs that train NCE teachers. They used to solely train teachers for junior secondary school, but now they now train teachers for elementary school, because the NCE that they provide has become the minimum qualification for primary school teachers since 1998. Some colleges also offer NCE pre-primary programs to train teachers for the pre-primary level of education. This training is provided through colleges of education, institutes of education, and education faculties/departments of universities.
4. University graduates with secondary school professional certificates in their specialties. All traditional Nigerian colleges offer Bachelor of Education Degree Programs to holders of the senior school certificate and the NCE. Senior Secondary School teachers are educated at university education faculties.
5. University graduates and postgraduates with professional qualifications, or practical qualifications with industrial exposure and experience at educational institutions. Higher education includes postsecondary education provided by universities, polytechnics, colleges of technology, colleges of education, advanced training colleges, correspondence colleges, and other institutions linked with them. His or her motto should be “Leadership by example.” The teacher, as a knowledge dispenser, must be well-educated as well as a resource person who can aid students in getting the knowledge they need.
A teacher should be able to apply a variety of teaching concepts that result in a change in students’ behavior as a technician, suggesting that a teacher should be able to encourage or urge students to learn.
A teacher must maintain healthy interpersonal interactions with his students and coworkers while creating a positive learning environment in the classroom. Students will be able to work independently with little or no supervision as a result of such friendly ties. This will help to boost the students’ positive attitudes regarding learning. A teacher’s obligations are the specified responsibilities that a teacher must perform at some time. They have a number of responsibilities in the teaching and learning processes.
Some Of The Responsibilities Of A Qualified Teacher
• The teacher must be capable of fostering the moral, social, and cultural legacy of the community.
• The instructor must be eager to learn at all times. He should be able to do research, be computer savvy, and understand how to get information from the internet.
• A teacher must have a positive influence on pupils and motivate students under his supervision to learn in order to attain educational goals.
• He must be well-versed and certified in his specialty. He must be adaptive to changes in his field and ready to think beyond the box.
• The instructor must be able to communicate effectively as well as present a clear, succinct, and logical lesson. • He must be able to satisfy the emotional, physical, intellectual, and social needs of the students. • He must be able to help students develop attitudes, morals, and norms that support national unity and solidarity.
• The teacher should be able to help students acquire critical thinking abilities and long-term scientific attitudes.
• A teacher must be able to accommodate the individual learning styles of his or her students and combat mediocrity. • A teacher must be able to analyze his or her own performance as well as that of his or her students.
